Renovating an old house is often more complex and stressful than building a brand-new house. Expertise and excellent planning are inevitable to envision a perfectly renovated structure. Rijas, a native of Ambalapuzha in Alappuzha, Kerala, decided to give a modern makeover to his ancestral home instead of demolishing it as he was emotionally attached to the house. He entrusted architect couple Shafeeq and Salna to give a facelift to his old house, making it perfect to host an upcoming wedding in the family.

The double-storey concrete house was almost two and a half decades old. The family insisted that the house should be renovated without making any extreme changes to the structure. The designers have been able to give the house a fabulous makeover by adding chic designer elements.

The front yard, which was quite plain, has been turned into a beautifully curated landscape by paving tiles and grass in alternate layers. A split tile screen has been added to grant a refreshing look to the elevation. Meanwhile, the brick wall with terracotta finish on the balcony adds a rustic charm. The second porch on the side now looks neat with stone-clad wall.

Designed in 3500 sqft, this renovated mansion has car porches, a sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with an adjacent work area and four bedrooms.

Natural light and cool breeze shied away from entering the old house even though the interiors were quite spacious. So, the spaces inside the house have been rearranged to overcome this problem without taking down too many walls.

Meanwhile, the old furniture is replaced with stylish custom-made furniture to make the interiors look amazing. Besides, the old flooring, wiring and sanitary works too were completely replaced to ensure safety and style. In the renovated house, unique flooring patterns have been used to highlight each space.

Interestingly, the new bedrooms are extremely cosy and look nothing like the ones in the old house. An old bedroom, which was quite spacious, has been divided into two modern bedrooms. Besides, an additional bedroom too has been added. All the bedrooms have lots of windows to let in sunshine and air. Moreover, all the bedrooms are bath-attached and boast of modern facilities.

The old kitchen too is renovated to suit the family’s modern lifestyle. Besides adding a work area, the kitchen is equipped with many amazing features and amenities. The owner and visitors viewed the house in disbelief after it was renovated.
