Living in an area that is prone to natural disasters and other calamities could be extremely stressful. It is important to pay heed to the warnings and alerts issued by authorities and move to safe locations or relief camps. Those who live in such areas should keep water, snacks and other essentials packed in small bags. This would ensure your safety even if help arrives a little late.

Do not ignore official instructions to move to relief camps or other safe areas. If you are not able to move your pet animals to safety, set it free. Turn off the main switch and remove the fuse if the house gets flooded.

Arrange life-jackets for family members in flood-prone regions. Moreover, clear all the barriers that may stop the rescue boats from reaching your house.

  • Do not try to escape by swimming if flood water enters the house. Always try to seek refuge in raised parts of the house.
  • Do not go near flooded areas or violent water sources as mere spectators, as strong currents could put your lives in danger even if you know swimming.
  • What to do if your house gets flooded
  • You should return to the house only after the flood waters have subsided.
  • Before switching on the electric appliances, the wiring in the house should be thoroughly inspected by an electrician.
  • Clean the house well using disinfectants.
  • Make sure that the doors could be closed properly. Ensure that the windows are properly fixed onto the sills.
  • Clean the wells and drinking water tanks using bleaching powder. You could also do super chlorination.
  • Make sure that septic tanks aren’t damaged. Wear gloves and other safety gear while cleaning the house after the floods.
