Rohith and Meera’s brand-new house at Angamaly seems like it has been built just to enjoy the ravishing beauty of the rains. The couple, both admirers of classical music, didn’t think twice before giving their dream dwelling the name of a raga-‘Megha Malhar’. The structure has been designed to suit the unique tropical climate of Kerala that receives rains for six months in a year.
There are specific spots in the house from where you could enjoy the beauty of rains. Architect Abhijith of the Responsive Architectural Well-being (RAW) is credited for designing such a marvellous house. Besides the main gate, there is a traditional-style padippura too. The padippura, the entrance door and the corridor inside the house is aligned in a straight line. This amazing tropical abode built in 2950 sqft has a car porch, long sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a courtyard, two bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor. Meanwhile, the upper floor has two more bedrooms, a bathroom, a multi-utility area, pooja space and a balcony.
The house dons earthy tones at certain spots, that are delightful to the eyes. The clay tiles paved on the sloped roof and the highlighter walls built using brick stone cladding finish on both sides grant a rustic charm to the house. The long and spacious sit-out with in-built sitting area is the perfect spot to immerse yourself in the captivating allure of the monsoon rains.
The entrance door, crafted in teak wood boasts intricate designer carvings. Meanwhile, the corridor is what connects the areas in the house. The formal living area is elegantly furnished, with a customised couch set and a TV unit. The interior walls are decorated with many paintings and classy art works gifted by the owner’s relatives. Designer tiles in Moroccan finish have been used for flooring in the common areas.
The corridor leads to the courtyard with a double-height ceiling which is secured with toughened glass. The wall, highlighted with brick cladding, exudes vintage vibes. Moreover, the courtyard acts as an open space that connects both floors.
The staircase has been built by paving teak wood planks on square tube structure. The area beneath the staircase has been turned into a party space where the family’s friends and relatives often gather.
The kitchen is compact and fit for the busy lifestyle of the couple. An adjacent dining area and a work area complete the kitchen.
Two bedrooms each have been arranged on both the floors. The walls of the parents’ bedroom are lined with many windows that open to the pleasant greenery outside. A bay window too has been arranged here to relax with a coffee and a book while it rains outside. The family can’t praise architect Abhijith enough for designing such unique features that make their house stand out.
The bedrooms on the upper floor are quite simple. One of the bedrooms has a balcony from where rains could be enjoyed. Besides, there is a multi-utility space too on this floor.
The house named ‘Megha Malhar’, the raga which is believed to bring the rains is an abode of enchanting beauty and positivity.
