"I am a regular viewer of ‘Veedu’ programme aired in Manorama channel. The concepts and valuable tips featured in the programme helped me gain insight to design an affordable dream home.

An added advantage was entrusting the Herculean task of construction with our family friend Surendra Kumar. This made our job easier and hassle-free as Surendra, who is a designer himself, could easily understand our requirements and connect with our taste," says Leela.

The primary requirement was to overcome the tricky situation of arranging spacious rooms, that promise maximum flow of natural light and air, in a small area. Hence flat box elevation was adopted to make maximum use of the space. The foundation and structure were built on pillar foundation. The pillars at the sit-out were given granite covering.

A sit-out, a formal living area, family living, dining room, kitchen, work area, a library, three bedrooms, a balcony and an open terrace form the 2,400sqft house.

An in-built low wall in the traditional 'sopanam style' and wooden panelling work in teakwood give a tinge of ethnic charm to the sit-out

White hue painted on the outer and inner walls exudes an alluring classy charm, while big windows allow light an air to flow inside. The double height stair area is perfected with railings with a blend of stainless steel and toughened glass. The free space under the stairs is creatively utilised to set up a pebbled courtyard.

“Ours is a family of booklovers. So there was no compromise in designing a reading area with cupboards made of teakwood," says Leela.

The kitchen sporting a green-white theme has cabinets made of multi-wood and MDF and granite counter top.

“At time of rising cost of materials and labour, the entire structure and furnishing was completed in just Rs 42 lakh. This could not have been possible without the valuable inputs and guidance from the ‘Veedu’ programme aired in Manorama channel, Thank you Manorama for being a source of inspiration to pursue my dream,” said Leela.
