Haridas’ brand new house at Korom near Payyannur in Kannur, Kerala is quite special in so many ways. The family wanted a house, with all the facilities required for a small family, in 10 cents. Besides, they wanted to build their dream dwelling without burning a hole in their pocket.
The exteriors feature the classic style of the traditional architecture. The roof isn’t plastered but installed with a truss work that has concrete roofing tiles paved on it. As the area is rich in laterite stone deposits, the foundation of this house too was built using laterite stones instead of hard rocks. The walls are built using interlocking bricks. This helped save the expenses for cement and sand. Gypsum plastering that requires just a coating of primer is done on the walls. The cost of applying putty was thus saved.
This beautiful house, designed in 866 sqft, has a sit out, living cum dining area, kitchen and two bedrooms. The sit out resembles the traditional sopanam that is elegant and eye catching. The entrance door that is embellished with beautiful carvings opens to the ‘L’ shaped hall. The living and the dining areas are part of this main hall. One could easily catch a view of the pooja space as soon as the entrance door is opened.
The gypsum false ceiling which is usually seen in luxury mansions are spotted here as well. The LED lighting makes the interiors look extremely pleasant. Besides, it also helps in maintaining a comfortable atmosphere by reducing the heat inside the house.
Glass flooring is done in the living space and a small pebble courtyard too has been arranged here. Vitrified tiles with granite finish are meanwhile paved on the floor in the common areas.
The small dining table can accommodate four persons. A divan is placed closer to the dining table to accommodate the guests.
Limiting the use of timber for furnishing has played a pivotal role in keeping the expenses in check. The windows and the door frames inside the house are built in molded steel. All doors except the entrance door are readymade, made with compressed wood.
There are two bedrooms that have an area of 10 x 10 in this house. Cupboards are there for storage. There are windows on both the walls for cross ventilation.
The rectangular kitchen has lower cabinets so that the space wouldn’t look congested. The windows here bring in lots of natural sunshine. Granite is paved on the counter top.
The construction of this beautiful house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on an impressively low budget of Rs 13 lakh. The most amazing fact is that this house was built on such a low budget without compromising too much on the quality of the furnishing and décor.
Among the various factors that contributed in reducing the expenses, building the foundation using laterite stones played a significant role. The walls are built using interlocking bricks with gypsum plastering. This saved the cost for applying coats of putty. The use of timber is limited. Windows and door frames made in molded steel are used inside the house. Vitrified tiles that cost Rs 39 – 49 are used for flooring.
