Askar, a native of Malappuram, had waited for almost a decade to complete the construction of his dream home. Like many expatriates who do not have any prior experience in construction in Kerala, Askar too had begun the construction of his house without a proper plan or other preparations. Initially, the family had decided to build a comfortable, single storied house. However, in 2010, after building a sloped roof and cement plastering the structure, the family suddenly realized that it wasn’t the dwelling they had imagined. In the meantime, Askar’s business too had flourished. So, the family decided to rebuild the house and approached designer Anas Muhammad, who is also a friend, to prepare an amazing design.

The designer convinced the family that knocking down a structure that was almost 70% complete and then rebuilding it would create unnecessary financial burden. Anas designed a new house that looked modern and luxurious, that too without destroying most parts of the old structure. From a 2200 sq ft humble abode, the house got transformed into a mega mansion built in 7000 sq ft area. The new house features the classy elegance of the colonial theme. The sloped roof in the front of the old structure was retained. However, the slope in the center and back of the roof were levelled to add the upper floors.

This regal mansion, sprawled in 7000 sq ft, has a car porch, sit out, formal and family living areas, dining space, courtyard, kitchen with an adjacent work area, four bedrooms and an upper living area.

The flooring works in the old structure were almost completed. The rest of the flooring was done by retaining these. A perfect blend of vitrified tiles, granite and wooden tiles are used for flooring in this house.

The furniture is custom-made to suit the theme of the house. Furnishing is mostly done in plywood, veneer and teak wood finish. The gypsum false ceiling and the LED lighting add a pleasant look to the interiors. Each area in the interiors is defined using unique designs and features. For instance, the cement sheet panelling on the wall in the dining area is truly eye-catching. Meanwhile, the wall beside the stairway is highlighted using yellow coloured natural stone claddings.

The beautiful courtyard is the highlight of the interiors. This semi – closed courtyard opens to the stunning views of nature. Metal grills are installed here for added safety. Meanwhile, exposed brick work dons the wall on one side. Artificial grass that is paved on the floor and the indoor plants are used to decorate this beautiful space.

The family and the architect made sure that everything was perfect about the house this time as there was no room for making a mistake again. It took almost a year to complete the construction of the new structure as the family wanted their house to be elegant, beautiful and comfortable. Askar and his family are thrilled that they got the house of their dreams even though they had to patiently wait for 10 years.
