In Kerala where people love to flaunt their stylish mansions, serene abodes which hide behind the lush greenery of exquisite plants and foliage have great significance. Antony, a native of Neendakara in Kollam, Kerala is excited to show around his idyllic house immersed in tranquility. His initial plan was to renovate his old house. However, time had taken a toll on the structure and the walls and the ceiling were all decayed. He was advised that constructing a new house would be the best decision. Architects Ajay and Thara made sure that they designed a beautiful house which perfectly suited the interests and preferences of the family members.
It is the roof, in three layers, which is flaunted as the unique design element of the house. GI sheet is paved on GI truss work in the first level. A layer of thermocol on top of it resists the heat while the roofing tiles add a rustic charm to the overall look of the house.
The spaces are arranged to suit the structure of the narrow plot which is elongated to the back. The coastline is just a kilometer away from the house. Lots of windows are arranged in the back of the house to receive the refreshing breeze from the sea. The ceiling, in double-height, makes the interiors look vast and spacious. Though fans are installed in all the rooms, there is no need to switch it on during day time. Windows fill the interiors with pleasant sunshine as well. Antony says that these features help save on electricity bill significantly.
Formal and family living areas, dining space, kitchen and four bedrooms are mainly arranged in this beautiful house which has an area of 2800 sq ft. The family was particular that interior walls shouldn’t create boundaries between spaces. So the indoor spaces are designed in the open style. The living and the dining areas and the kitchen are all inter-connected. The prayer area is separated in the formal living space.
Ceiling rafters and paneling are mainly done in wood. Elegant wooden furniture adds to the classy look of the interiors. The custom-made wooden decor and other features were diligently made by a group of dedicated carpenters who stayed at the site for around one and a half years to complete the work. Marble is paved on the floor in all the main areas. Wooden flooring is done at some places using the leftover wood. Wash area is arranged beneath the stairway.
The kitchen is in the open style with adjacent work area and store room. In – built seating arrangements, close to the windows, are the highlights of the bedrooms. Antony says that his relatives and friends are curious to know more about his house whose interiors are pleasantly cool. He reveals that using eco-friendly construction materials and arranging the spaces to receive the bouties of nature are the secret behind his amazing dwelling.
