This low-budget Kuttanadu house survived the floods

Dr Sunil purchased some farmland at Marari, a picturesque hamlet in Kuttanadu, to retreat from the bustle of the hectic city life. He built a small farm house at this plot to spend some quality time, enjoying the incredible beauty of the low-lying Kuttanadu.

The unique design of this farm house has always created curiosity among the local people and architecture enthusiasts. However, this prefab cottage built on an elevation has survived the devastating floods that had destroyed more than half of the houses in Kuttanadu in the coastal Alappuzha district.

This 600 sqft farm house stands ‘tall’ on a 6-acre agricultural land. The foundation is elevated from the ground with pillars of GI frames. The walls are built with hurudees (clay) blocks, and the windows and two balconies are done in aluminum. Ordinary tiles are paved in the interiors of the farm house.

The space underneath the cottage can be turned into an excellent barbecue space when it is not raining. The house has two bath-attached bedrooms and a multipurpose hall. The owner cost only Rs 10 lakh for construction and furnishing. Experts vouch for the durability and strength of such unique designs that can withstand natural disasters like floods.
