Dubai-based Jitendra Ramchand, a native of Kannur, built a house and gifted it to his parents. What’s more, a person with an ocean of friends at home and abroad, he has a separate nook built for all the guests and relatives who come calling. He has also set apart a bedroom for his closest friend and family in Dubai when they come down for a holiday.
Exterior
The plan was drawn to suit the long rectangular layout of the land. As the land was marshy, the foundation had to be made doubly strong and this incurred a hefty cost. The elevation is a combination of contemporary elements woven into the traditional architectural styles of Kannur. The structure would remind one of Kannur’s famous forts and such elements are quite visible in several parts of the front elevation. Stone claddings embellish the exterior.
Living room
As the house has a separate area where guests and friends can be accommodated, the formal living is not quite sprawling. This was deliberately designed so. The TV unit has been done up in plywood and veneer. The long space below the TV unit is covered with pebbles with LEDs built into it. This lighting is just what’s required while watching TV at night. The fold ceiling here adds to the room décor.
Dining room
Different shades of yellow brighten up the dining section. Even the fans have a yellow touch. The dining table and chairs have been built with irul wood. Niches in jali work add to the room’s looks. The wooden tiles on the wash area walls are decorative and attractive. The wash area storage has been built with multiwood.
Kitchen
The kitchen cabinets are all in laminated marine plywood. White granite covers the U-shaped kitchen countertop. A long, wide window here lets in air and light in their full glory. The blinds are in muted shades to go with the color of the interiors.
Bedrooms
With one down and three upstairs, the house has four bedrooms. A lot of care has gone into giving each room separate design elements. A jute cushioning covers the wall in the master bedroom where the headrest finds its place. Instead of table lamps, there are concealed lights folded within it. The wardrobes are all in plywood over veneer.
Friends’ area
The space set apart for entertaining guests can be called a party area. A fine place to chill out, one can either sprawl out on the sofas or lie down and watch television. The TV unit in MDF has jali cuts worked on it and the whole unit has been spray painted. The jali work effectively conceals the spot light on the ceiling of a bar counter close by.
