Pottiyappam, a popular Malabari teatime snack is deliciously sweet and crispy. Ironically, the name of the snack means 'failed' in local slang. Those who have tried pottiyappam, however, vouch for its incredible taste. During the iftar parties, pottiyappam finds a special place on the dining table. The deep fried crispy snack is generally sweet. However, those who like it spicy can add chilli powder to the dough.
Ingredients
2 cups all purpose flour (maida)
¼ tsp baking powder
Salt as required
Black sesame seeds
1 egg
Water as required
Oil to fry
Preparation
In a bowl add the all purpose flour, baking powder, sesame seeds and salt as required
Mix well
Add an egg and some water
Mix it into soft dough
Keep it aside for at least 2 hours
Roll the dough thinly using a rolling pin
Cut square pieces out of it
Heat oil in pan
Add the square shaped pieces of dough
Deep fry until it turns crisp and golden
When the extra oil has been drained, coat these in sugar or jaggery syrup
Add chilli powder in the dough if you like it spicy.
