Fish has been an inevitable part of both Kerala cuisine and economy for long. Non-vegetarian lunch typically has fried fish on the corner of the plate. Here is the most basic recipe to make a spicy fried fish for lunch using minimal ingredients.

Ingredients
1 kg fish, cut into small pieces
2 tbsp chilli powder
20 shallots
8 cloves of garlic
1 tsp chopped ginger
Salt to taste
1 tsp fried fennel seeds
Coconut oil for frying
4 tsp rice flour

Preparation
Wash and drain the fish pieces
Grind chilli powder, shallots, garlic, ginger and salt to a paste
Apply this on the fish pieces and marinate for 30 minutes
Heat oil in a pan deep fry the fish pieces
after frying all the pieces, sieve the oil and keep the crumbs aside
Heat 2 tsp of the sieved oil
Add rice flour to it
Add the crumbs to this followed by the fried fish, mix well
Serve it along with onion salad
