A speciality Goan curry that is wholesome and delicious, this fish preparation is a regular in many households in Goa.

Ingredients
6 large mackerels, with scales removed
2 cups coconut, grated
1 onion sliced long
3 onions, finely chopped
8 red chillies, dry 
2 tsp Turmeric powder
50 peppercorns
3 tbs oil    
15gm tamarind, the size of a lemon
2 tbs rice 
2 tbs black gram 
½ tsp fenugreek seeds
Salt, to taste

Preparation
Cut each mackerel into 4 pieces, apply salt and marinate for some time.
Wash after fifteen minutes
Heat one tsp of oil in a pan. Add the rice to it and shallow fry till it turns dark brown
Shallow fry the black gram in the same oil and remove when browns
Put fenugreek seeds and black peppercorns into the same oil
Remove from the oil when the fenugreek seeds splutter
Cut one onion lengthwise. Stir fry the onions in 2 tsp of oil in a separate pan till golden brown. Add grated coconut and stir-fry till brown
Grind coarsely rice and black gram together
Grind the stir-fried coconut, tamarind, chillies and turmeric to a coarse paste and keep aside. Fenugreek seeds and peppercorns should also be ground to a fine paste
Chop the remaining 3 onions finely and stir-fry in the remaining oil until they become soft
Mix the ground coconut with 5 cups of water and salt
Add the mackerels, ground rice mix and black gram dal with the curry
Stir and cook for 3 minutes
