Kondotty: A restaurant serving all dishes free of cost may be an unlikely event. However, such an incident did take place in this town in Malappuram district during the opening of a 'shawarma' counter on Monday.
Announcements had been made on social media that the eatery would serve free shawarma as part of opening the counter. As the message went viral, around 700 people queued up in front of the restaurant by 5pm, when the free shawarma distribution started.
However, by the time all the shawarmas were served, every other dish in the hotel too was gobbled up by guests.
It happened this way. When hundreds of people came to the restaurant to relish the shawarma, the cooks took some time to prepare the item and the wait became longer. To please the waiting guests, the owner of the restaurant made another announcement - visitors could order any other item on the menu free of cost.
Hearing this new offer, the people in the queue rushed to empty the hotel of every eatable. Even the toffees on the cash counter and ‘neyyappam’ in the shelf were not spared. Some visitors invaded the kitchen and took away the biriyani, ghee rice, ‘porotta’, beef, chicken and fish curries.
“The free shawarma distribution did not work out as planned but I am happy that the inauguration turned out to be a grand affair,” said the hotel owner.
