Music director R Somasekharan, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, passed away on Monday. The veteran may not have a long list of songs to his credit, but the fewer ones he composed have managed to leave a lasting impression. The song ‘Puliyilakarayolam Pudava Chutti' he composed for ‘Jathakam’ (1989) will always remain an unforgettable melody for Malayalees.
Though he was given an opportunity to compose songs for ‘Kireedom’, regrettably his job abroad and other time constraints made it difficult for him to take up the assignment. In fact, his long working stint abroad has stopped him from taking up several great Malayalam movie projects.
Somasekharan, who composed music for over 50 films, took a long sabbatical from the field in the 90s. Though he returned after a decade, he couldn’t really make an impact during his second coming. Later he shifted to composing music for serials and music albums. The last film he composed music was for ‘Thuriyam’ in 2019.
His life was always musically rich. As he passed away at the age of 77, he leaves behind a trail of superhit songs. Malayalam cinema had lost a musician who had so much more to offer to the world of music.
