Mohanlal whose directorial debut 'Barroz' is gearing up for release on December 25, will play a prominent role in the upcoming Telugu mythological drama 'Kannappa', which will hit theatres next year. The makers released the character's first look poster on Monday. Mohanlal will play the character Kirata in the movie, which will be headlined by actor-director Vishnu Manchu. Kirata is described as the 'Master of the Pashupatastra. The victor over the victorious, the legendary kirata of the forest,” the post read. Mohanlal's fierce tribal look has generated a lot of buzz on social media.

Kannappa directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh and produced by Mohan Babu will also feature Josita Anola, Nayanthara, Vishnu Manchu, Preity Mukundan, Kajal Aggarwal and Akshay Kumar.

Vishnu Manchu unveiled the teaser of the film at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film, acccording to the makers, aims to enlighten audiences worldwide about the timeless tales and cultural heritage that our film encapsulates.

'Kannappa' revolves around a legendary figure from religious folklore who was a hunter and devoted follower of Lord Shiva. As the story goes, he gouged out an eye as an offering to a lingam in his bid to meet the Lord in person. He was about to sacrifice his second eye when Shiva appeared in front of him and blessed him. Kannappa continues to be worshipped as one of the 63 Shaivite saints known as the Nayanars.
