Kozhikode: Five people got a fresh lease of life after the organs of a 46-year-old doctor, who died of stroke, were donated to them.
Dr Akhilesh was a homeo doctor at Tirur in Malappuram. He was admitted to the Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode after he suffered a stroke the other day. His wife Sindhu, a teacher at the Beypore High School, gave her consent to donate his organs, as per his wishes.
One of Akhilesh's kidneys were transplanted to a 49-year-old patient, who was undergoing treatment at the Baby Memorial Hospital for several years. His eyes were donated to Comtrust Eye Hospital, liver and a kidney to the MIMS Hospital.
Dr Suni George, Dr Paulose Chally, and Dr Shivakumar led the surgery.
Son of Haridas and late Valsala, Akhilesh also took part in several musical gatherings in Kozhikode.
Advaitha and Sarang Badri are his children. Akhila Bindu (pharmacy assistant professor, Kozhikode Medical College) is his sister.
Kind act
The organs of a 51-year-old woman, Nisha Menon, were also donated to three people.
Nisha Menon is the wife of Somasekharan, an official at the circulation section of Malayala Manorama's Malappuram unit.
Nisha was admitted to the Aster MIMS Hospital in Kozhikode after she suffered brain hemorrhage on August 26. She was declared brain dead on August 28.
Though the family was devastated after Nisha's demise, they informed the hospital authorities of their consent to donate two kidneys and the liver.
These will help two patients at the Aster MIMS Hospital in Kozhikode and one patient at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital.
Aster MIMS Hospital CEO Farhan Yasin lauded the family's kind act even in this hour of mourning.
Anand S Menon and Anjana are her two children.
After the surgery, Aster MIMS doctors, including Dr Abraham Mammen and Dr Suresh Kumar, and staff paid their last respects to Nisha.
