Thiruvananthapuram: All the schools in Kerala would be declared as full-fledged ‘Haritha Vidyalayams’ (Green schools) on December 31 this year, Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty said recently. “Fifty-percent of the schools would become Haritha Vidyalayams by November 1 and the remaining schools will achieve the status before December 31,” said the Minister.

Explaining the initiatives planned by the government in the education sector, the minister said that campaigns against waste and drugs would be conducted on campuses. The Chief Minister will deliver an anti-drugs message on November 1 and it will be taken to all families by the schoolchildren. An assembly against drugs and other abusive substances would be organised in schools on Children’s Day, November 14, and a seminar on the topic would be held on December 10. Class assemblies also will take place on the same subject on January 30, 2025, said the Minister.

“Waste management and hygiene are now part of the curriculum in classes 3, 5, 7 and 9 and these topics have been included in the new textbooks,” said Sivankutty.
