A career as marine engineer in a merchant ship based in India as well as abroad offers high pay packages. Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a government of India enterprise, has now invited applications for admission to its 12-month GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) course, which enables successful candidates to pursue this attractive career.
Admission details
There are 114 seats and the classes will start on September 1. Candidates could be sponsored by a shipping company or they may apply directly.
Eligibility to apply is a degree in Mechanical / Mechanical stream / Naval Architectural Stream / Marine Engineering with at least 50 per cent marks. Candidates also should have secured a minimum of 50 per cent marks in English in Class 10 or 12. They should not have crossed the age of 28 years on the day of the start of the course.
Good physical fitness is mandatory with a minimum height of 157 cm, proportionate weight and chest-size. Candidates should not suffer from colour blindness.
A certificate from a medical officer recognized by the Shipping Directorate has to be produced. Check the link ‘Marine Health Branch’ on the website www.dgshipping.gov.in for the purpose.
Candidates also have to clear the MMPE (Mercantile Marine Personality Evaluation) test, which evaluates their mental capabilities for employment in the sea. Another compulsory requirement is a passport.

Course fees
Students must stay in the campus during the course, for which the total fees covering expenses on accommodation, food and study equipment are Rs 4,85,000. An amount of Rs 2,42,500 has to be paid at the start of the course and the rest within the next three months as draft or online transfer.
The fee for female candidates is Rs 3,72,500.
Career prospects
Candidates who pass GME can undergo six-months’ training at sea, clear the Class IV competency exam of the Shipping Ministry and start their career as Junior Marine Engineer Officer in a merchant ship.
Subsequently, they can rise to the post of Chief Engineer based on experience, short-term training programmes and earning high competency certificates.
