The National Eligibility Test, popularly known as NET, that makes candidates eligible for the post of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship or both have begun. This time it comes with new vibes. Till recently, the CBSE conducted the NET in 84 subjects in 91 selected cities spread across the country. From Dec 2018 onwards, the UGC NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency. The exams will be conducted in online mode this time.
Most colleges these days offer NET coaching. Since day one students are enlightened about the need to prepare for NET. We cannot hold the colleges at fault as one of the criteria set by the NAAC in grading colleges is counting the NET and JRF holders it has produced. (NAAC is the National Assessment and Accreditation Council)
The celebrity status accorded to NET-holders by peers and teachers also adds to the pressure fely by those attempting it. Amidst the struggle for cracking the exam, the true love for the subject might be lost. Another worry is regarding the quality of teachers who qualify after passing the NET.
The stress faced by students preparing for their board exams and medical and engineering entrances is well known, but rarely do we speak about the problems encountered by the postgraduate students pursuing courses that are not career-oriented.
Before enrolling for a PG course every student has to choose between higher education and a professional career. When many of our friends opt for the latter and start leading an independent life, the choice becomes even more difficult. Overwhelming pressure felt during the admission worsens with a heavy syllabus subsequently. Moreover, pressure also builds up from anxiety about the future. This is higher for women owing to pressures about marriage and securing job.
A few points should be borne in mind before appearing for the NET. The exam needs to be approached with a passion for the subject rather than an urge to prove yourself. Since the examination is objective type it is not a fool-proof technique to test your aptitude. Your results thus are highly dependent on the question paper too. So attempt every NET exam with an open mind to understand your subject of interest more deeply and being able to qualify for JRF is a great opportunity it offers. Remember, there are numerous other jobs suiting your qualification apart from a teaching career.
Let the next NET be an opportunity to show the love for your subject. Here is wishing all NET aspirants the best!!
