If advertisers world over have found online video the most attractive and memorable form of content, Ben Morrell can take part of the credit. Ben, who is the vice-president of Brightcove, Asia, is one of the first few to tap the monetisation potential of video. He was also instrumental in finding a solution to a software advertisers across the world had found most troubling: the pop-up block software.
Ben's instincts have been honed over the years. Ben has over 10 years' experience in the broadcast and digital space, working on projects with the world's largest and most well-known media companies.
Ben will be one of the guest speakers at Manoramaonline Geojit Techspectations 2018, which will be held at Kochi on November 24. 'Rebuild. Regain. Retain' is the motto of Techspectations 2018, a get together where some of the finest minds in the field of global digital technology will discuss the developments that are animating the sector.
At Brightcove since 2014, Ben leads the technical sales and solution practice throughout Asia, bringing a large number of premium customers to the platform, including top tier PayTV, Over-the-top (OTT) media services, broadcasters and publishers.
Ben's mantra has always been to stay ahead of the digital evolution. The Taiwan OTT Television Research Report 2018, which Brightcove Asia had initiated, has revealed the high potential of OTT TV to become a successful extension to the pay TV business in Taiwan. This can be a pointer of things to come. (OTT is a term used to refer to content providers like Netflix and Amazon Prime that distribute streaming media as a standalone product directly to viewers over the Internet, bypassing telecommunications, multichannel television, and broadcast television platforms that traditionally act as a controller or distributor of such content.)
A frequent speaker on online video solutions for media and broadcast customers, Ben offers deep strategic and business insight on Live, Video on Demand and OTT workflows. Ben now leads the Asia region across two offices (in Singapore and Mumbai) in his role as vice-president.
“Thirty per cent of all desktop advertising currently goes up in smoke as a result of pop-up ad-blocking software,” Ben says about the subversion of pop-up blocker. “It is a real loss to the business, but by using cloud-delivered advertising solutions, advertisements are more likely to reach viewers and prevent ad performance loss caused by hard technical challenges of delivering video ads to multiple devices and apps in a complex ecosystem,” he said.
Prior to Brightcove, Ben held various sales engineering, technical and solution roles at Grass Valley and the Nine Network Australia, where he focussed on sports and cutting edge broadcast technology. Ben holds a MEng degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Warwick, UK.
