Thiruvananthapuram: The coastal districts of Kerala have been put on alert as the sea will be rough near the shore until Tuesday midnight due to the effect of intermittent high waves, said the Met department on Tuesday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this natural phenomenon called swell waves.
The sea will be rough along the low-lying areas of Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Ponnani, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. These areas may experience surges intermittently for short duration (15-17 sec) until Tuesday midnight. The waves may reach 2.0-2.5 m height.
The district collector has urged the coastal residents and tourists to exercise caution as the seas are expected to turn rougher during high tide. The collector has also advised strict regulation to those who visit Shankumugham beach.
Warning for Lakshadweep coast
The department also warned residents of Lakshadweep against the swell waves. “There is a possibility that sea will be rough near the shore and also around the low-lying areas like Agati, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kitan and Minicoy. These areas may experience surges intermittently during the same time," the Met bulletin said.
The effects of these natural phenomenon in the open ocean is likely to be minimal, but all water-based recreational activity at the coast need to be suspended during these events. Fishermen should anchor their boats at a fair distance from each other to avoid collision and damage. Moreover, they should not take out the boats from the shore to the sea and back, the authorities warned.
