Leak of Shuhaib case details: Kannur SP's crime squad disbanded Youth Congress leader Shuhaib was murdered on February 12.

Mattannur: The Kannur SP’s crime squad has been disbanded following reports that details of the investigation into the Shuhaib murder case were being leaked. Five police officers of the six-member squad have been subsequently transferred to various police stations.

Apart from the charge of details of the probe being leaked, the crime squad members were facing allegations of not cooperating whole-heartedly with the investigation.

Kannur SP G Sivavikram had complained to the state police chief, north zone DGP and Kannur range SP against the officers of the squad that they were revealing details of its work, including raids planned, to others. The police had resorted to several measures, including raids, to nab the real accused in the Shuhaib murder case. However, when the SP reached the specified areas, the suspects had already escaped, following which, he informed higher-ups that members of the crime squad were leaking crucial information.

Replying to repeated queries from reporters, state police chief Loknath Behera admitted to the lapses of the crime squad. Behera, who was on sick leave, handed over the probe into the Shuhaib case to the Kannur range IG when he rejoined duty.

A single bench of the Kerala High Court has ordered a CBI probe into the Shuhaib murder case, but the state government has filed an appeal.

Youth Congress local leader Shuhaib was killed at Edayannur, Mattannur, on February 12, 2018.
