UDF aims 2 Guinness world records with just a banner

Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF in Kerala is all set to enter the Guinness world record for the longest banner when it showcases a 70-km cloth banner on February 6 on NH 47.

The banner, which contains the signatures of 10,843,450 people, will also set the record for the maximum number of signatures on a single banner.

It will be held by the UDF workers from the Secretariat here to the Kollam Collectorate for three minutes at 5 pm, said the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) leadership on Tuesday.

UDF chairman and leader of opposition, Ramesh Chennithala, told reporters that the banner was prepared during his month-long statewide rally which ended here in December.

"The signatures have been put by people who expressed their unhappiness against the state and the Center over various policies.

"This banner has been prepared by the over 23,000 booth committees of the UDF all across the state. There are two records that we will achieve, one is the longest banner and the other is it contains this many signatures in a single banner," said Chennithala.

Senior Congress legislator V D Satheesan, who was entrusted with the task of preparing the banner, said: "We have seen to it that traffic is stopped only for three minutes when the banner is held up.

"To ensure that there is no disruption to traffic we decided that all the workers will assemble on the NH 47 at 5 pm and hold the banner up for three minutes only," he said.
