Malappuram: Indians are getting taller by the generations. An average teenager in India stands tall compared to similar data from 35 years ago, a survey by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau has showed.
Boys and girls from Kerala top the chart in the survey conducted in 10 states. Gujarat and Tamil Nadu come second and third on the list prepared in association with the Indian Council of Medical Research.
At the national level, boys aged 18 or 19, on average, are 3.1 centimeter taller than boys who were in the same age group 35 years ago. Girls in the same age group is taller by 1 centimeter than their predecessors.
A 12-year-old girl is taller by 1.9 centimeters than someone aged 12 a decade ago. A 15-year-old boy from this generation is taller by 2.1 centimeters than someone from 10 years ago.
In Kerala, boys (aged 15) are taller by 4.6 centimeters and girls (aged 13) by 4.9 centimeters. An average 14-year-old Gujarati boy is taller by 2.5 centimeters than his predecessor and a 12-year-old girl taller by 2.7 centimeters.
In Tamil Nadu, a 15-year-old boy is taller by 2.6 centimeters than his predecessor and a 12-year-old girl taller by 2.3 centimeters.
The survey, which drew on data since 1975, also covered Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
