Thiruvananthapuram: Fishermen and other residents of Vizhinjam have promised to call off their agitation that had affected works on the international port for 11 days after the district administration offered to pay compensation for fishermen by the end of this month.
The talks with district collector K. Vasuki had promising progress, M. Vincent MLA said.
The collector said that the government would disburse the compensation due to the fishermen by November 30 and decide on the other demands later.
The administration also decided to form a permanent supervisory committee to address the grievances of the people related to the mega project.
The collector also promised that the fishermen community would be supplied with kerosene within 10 days.
Vizhinjam parish council president Fr Wilfred, secretary Johny Isahac and eight other parish council members also attended the meeting.
The parish council led the agitation to block the construction on October 24 to demand the immediate disbursal of compensation.
Though the administration offered to hold talks with the people on October 30, the district collector insisted that the people should call off their agitation before they could talk.
The government relented after an intelligence report that the strike could snowball to a crisis that could grind construction to a halt.
