Kochi: Prominent lawyer C.P. Udayabhanu was on Wednesday arrested here in a case related to the recent murder of a real estate broker Rajeev, a day after the Kerala High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea. Udayabhanu, who is the seventh accused in the case, was arrested from his brother's house in Thrippunithura.
He had gone into hiding after the High Court refused to grant him anticipatory bail.
In refusing anticipatory bail, the High Court had rejected Udayabhanu's argument that the police allegation of a conspiracy on the basis of phone calls he had with those arrested in the case is not sustainable. And the court did not respond to his plea for time to surrender, while pointing out justice is equally applicable to everyone.
Udayabhanu came under the police scanner because Rajeev had written to the director general of police citing death threats from the lawyer. However, the lawyer said the allegations were false.
Rajeev was found murdered on September 29 in an abandoned building at Pariyaram in Chalakudy. Two people -- Johny, aka, Chakkara Johny, and his accomplice Ranjith were arrested from Palakkad.
