Anchal, Thiruvananthapuram: A senior police officer and his driver have been held for driving around in an inebriated state. A medical test was conducted and a case has been filed against the driver.
Crime branch IG E.J. Jayarajan and police driver Santhosh were caught near Anchal police station at 5pm on Wednesday. A high-level probe has been ordered into the incident.
The Anchal police were alerted about a police vehicle being driven recklessly, leading to the duo's detention.
When they were caught near the police station, both were not even in a condition to get out of the vehicle. The DGP was informed immediately and a blood test was conducted on his advice.
The tests at Punalur taluk hospital have revealed that both were drunk. Santhosh was booked for drunk driving and later let off on bail. The vehicle, which was kept at the DYSP's office in Punalur, has also been released.
The duo reached Anchal after taking part in a party at IG Jayarajan's friend's place in Kottarakkara. An inquiry has begun, said IG Manoj Abraham, adding that they will have to face departmental action for the misuse of the official vehicle and drinking during duty time.
