Thiruvananthapuram: The inaugural M. Harish Govind Memorial Poetry Prize 2017, instituted by Poetry Chain, has been bagged by S. Jagathsimhan Nair, for his poetry collection ‘Blue Sun and Blasé Rains’.
The award, instituted in memory of M. Harish Govind, former bureau editor, The Hindu, Thiruvananthapuram, is awarded for a book of poems in English by a Kerala-based poet.
Announcing the award, the jury said that the book ‘Blue Sun and Blasé Rains’, showed “an unusual, sublime, and varied companionship with the muse, a devoted pursuit of craft not compromising on diction, spontaneity, or imagery, while retaining (its) own unique emotional stance.”
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2500, a memorial plaque and a citation.
The jury determining the award comprised of poets Neerada Suresh and Sarat Chandran.
The poetry prize will be given away by T.P. Srinivasan, former ambassador to the US in a Poetry Chain- Kerala International Centre (KIC) literary forum combine, to be conducted in October/ November 2017.
