This was once the popular refrain of lottery-sellers in Malayalam before it was immortalized in a film by actor Adoor Bhasi. The song goes thus: Oru roopa note koduthal oru laksham koode porum (shell out a rupee and walk home with a lakh). Probably, this is what keeps thousands going back to the lottery-seller every day. The allure of additional zeroes in one's bank account and the resultant decimation of worldly troubles keep the lottery business alive.
The Thiruvonam bumper lottery has been creating a buzz on Internet for quite some time. The Internet was abuzz with speculation - ranging from the winning district to the vocation of the winner. A random search threw up tips for lottery-takers and the number combinations to look to be the luckiest.
As per the statistics provided by an independent analytics source, from June 2012, the most number of prizes above Rs 1 lakh went to Palakkad district, 2,143. Just behind was Thrissur with 2,042 and Kottayam 1,819. The last on the list was Kasaragod, 290 (approx). The district to win the bumper prize of Rs 1 crore and above the most number of times is also Palakkad (8 times, data from June 2012). This is followed by Thiruvananthapuram, 6; and Thrissur 4. The most 'unlucky' lottery takers are in Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Alappuzha, and Idukki with the bumper prize going to the district only once each over the years.
And, to crown it all, the most-repeated number combination on winning tickets has been 0229, 53 times; 3560, 52 times; and 2199, 51 times. The number combinations that have repeated just 11 times is 3681 and 7710.
The statistics provider but says ticket-buyers should not take a decision based on the statistics as the number of prizes is directly proportional to ticket sales. The top-listed districts always top the sales chart too, sources say.
