Gory murders stalk Kottayam, leave a trail of mystery Kottayam has been time and again haunted by this meaningless bloodshed.

Kottayam: A headless body of a man was found bundled in a sack and left in a vacant lot at Manganam here on Sunday. Besides chopping off the head, the criminals had also sliced the body into two. The blood-chilling incident sent shock-waves across Kottayam.

The district had hit the headlines several times in the past for similar macabre incidents; from the sensational Praveen murder case in 2005 to the brutal killing of a non-resident Keralite, who was shot by his own son. For quite some time, such criminal incidents have been repeating in the district, giving uneasy times to the local residents. Some of them remain shrouded in mystery, even years after the crime.

February 15, 2005: Praveen murder

Praveen, a resident of Ettumanoor, was abducted on the night of February 15, 2005, and was smothered to death by DySP Shaji and some goons. The DySP abducted Praveen from near Gandhinagar Medical College road and strangled him to death with the help of Priyan, Suni, Saji alias Sajeesh. Later, in a bid to cover up the evidence, they chopped his body and threw the parts into water bodies near Cheeppukal Bridge, Thanneermukkam Bund and Kochi backwaters. The court found Shaji and others guilty and convicted them. They are serving jail term now.

November 23, 2013: Leneesh murder

The body of Leneesh, 31, a salesman from Changanassery, was found in a sack near Kunneppalam in Pambadi. His face had been mutilated by splashing acid.

The police registered a case of murder against 43-year-old Sreekala, the lover of the deceased, and four others. The police also arrested three hit men identified as Shijo Sebastian, 28, Shyam Kumar alias Hippy Shyam, 31, and Vithirikkunnel Rameshan alias Judo Rameshan, 28. Manu, 24, an autorickshaw driver from Kochuthopp was also arrested for helping them to hide the body of Leneesh.

May 30, 2016

Joy V. John, 68, expatriate Keralite, was allegedly shot dead by his son Sherry, 36. Later, he chopped the body into pieces and threw the parts off at various places to cover up the murder. The head of the body was found on the roadside near TECIL Company at Chingavanam and the torso from a garbage dump at Peroor near Changanassery. The son killed his father over long-time neglect and money disputes, according to the police.

No clue about these murders

March 16, 2010

Bodies of 35-year-old Prasad, a Puthuppalli native, and wife Maya, 30, were found in a waste dump near Usalampatty in Tamil Nadu. The probe by the local police and the state crime branch could not unravel the mystery behind the twin-murder.

November 27, 2012

Gopinathakurup, a resident of Channanikkad, was found murdered in an autorickshaw near Kallungathra church at Aymanam. The investigation by the local police and the crime branch failed to nab the culprits.
