Kerala govt declares holiday for Eid on June 26 Representational image

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has declared a holiday on June 26 for Eid-ul-Fitr. The chief minister's office announced the holiday for educational institutions and government offices on Monday.

Kerala will celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr as the new moon is spotted.

The holy month of Ramadan began on May 27 in Kerala with the sighting of the moon at Kappad in Kozhikode.

For a month, Muslims have been fasting from dawn to dusk, engaging in special prayers and keeping away from several temporal activities.

Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, ends with with Eid ul-Fitr, again with the sighting of the new moon as the indicator.
