Kochi: Young scientist S. Madhavan Namboodiri who won the national young scientists' award has received it from DRDO chairman Dr Christopher in New Delhi.
Namboodiri, scientist at the Kakkanad Naval Physical Oceanographic Lab, won the Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) award for the best discovery after he designed electronic packages of the sonar equipment on ships and submarines.
Ships and submarines use the sonar system for communication and for setting direction. Namboodiri, who hails from Haripad in Alapuzha district, is doing research on electronic packages in the sonar system.
The award fetches Rs1 lakh. He was chosen from scientists working at 52 DRDO centers in the country. The award panel reviewed discoveries and services from 2016. Some of Namboodiri's discoveries are being used in the ships and submarines of Indian Navy now.
Namboodiri joined the Kochi NPOL in 2010. He did schooling at Pallipad Naduvattom High School and later studied engineering at Kollam T.K.M. College.
His post-graduate degree was in thermal science and he did the course at NIT, Kozhikode. He is the son of Shambu Namboodiri and Savitri Devi of Haripad Pallipad Kadashra Neelamana Illam. His wife Gayatri is a software engineer at Kochi TCS. He has a daughter, Akshara.
