Many dread to enter a house where a death has occurred. But 25-year-old Sanya Kallingal is not afraid of dead bodies and is often seen at a morgue! She doesn’t close her eyes when human bodies are dissected on the post-mortem table; instead she takes their pictures with her camera from the best angles. Sanya is a forensic photographer. 

Why Sanya is always busy at the morgue! Sanya came into this rare profession by chance, though she was keen to become a photographer.

This resident of Erumapetti, Kunnamkulam, in Thrissur district, first started taking pictures of dead bodies in 2010. She came into this rare profession by chance, though she was keen to become a photographer. Once she happened to accompany by her teacher, Rajan Chempakasheri, to the house of an old woman who had committed suicide by pouring kerosene on herself. There, Rajan asked her to take photographs of the body. Though, taken aback for a while, Sanya soon gathered herself and took the pictures. Soon, this genre of photography became her profession.

Why Sanya is always busy at the morgue! Sanya was only 18 when she commenced forensic photography.

Sanya was only 18 when she commenced forensic photography. She made good use of Google to hone her skills over the years. So far she has taken over 200 post-mortem photographs. “I am not afraid of dead bodies but achieving victory professionally in something others are afraid of doing makes me very happy,” says Sanya. She is also good at album-making and cinematography. She has also worked behind the camera for Rafeeque Ahamed’s lyric video “Athrayum”. It became a super hit on YouTube.
