It’s a magnificent house that stands atop what looks like a hill, in Kattappana. With Idukki’s natural gifts of greenery, mist and mountains for backdrop, this, 4,500 sq ft elevation on an acre of verdure is a stunner!
A double-storied house which gives the semblance of a single-storey was what the owner visualized. He also wanted the house to gel naturally into the scenic settings around. All these factors have gone into its construction and the elevation does not disappoint.
The elevation stands three metres above road level. But not a single strip was leveled for the sake of the house. The natural land layout was retained and the structure was designed to match the ups and downs of the earth. The elaborately done landscaping falling in different levels spreads over the sprawling land area and enhances the grandeur of the house. The driveway from the gate to the car porch also heightens the visual effect and complements the landscaping.
The roofs are another attractive feature of the elevation. Concrete tiles have been spread over sloping truss work. As the truss has not been set at a great height, the effect the structure gives out is that of a single storied house.
A long, spacious and well-laid out verandah take you to the insides. A garden space in the sit-out to one side of the main door is a style element. The insides have been designed in the semi-open style. Formal living, family living, dining space, four bedrooms, kitchen and work area are the main components of the house.
The wooden-texture flooring is a perfect match for the interior décor and the wooden tiles for the living room look good. A drawing room wall textured in yellow is a highlight of the space.
The family living enjoys its privacy. It has an adjoining prayer space.
The main feature of the interior is the courtyard. Set by the side of the stairway, it offers a view of the entire house. Lights streams into the courtyard through the polycarbonate sheets laid on the roof.
The upper floor has been designed in the Mezzanine style. Toughened glass and wood make up the stairway décor.
An eight-seat dining table set against full glass door offers a great view of the green outside. Lavish on roominess, air and light, the place gives a fine feel. You can step out on to the grass from this place.
The bedrooms are large and airy. The many windows from the rooms take you to the serene view outside. All bedrooms have attached bathrooms and wardrobes.
The kitchen has been kept simple and has granite slabs on the counter. A breakfast counter finds space here. There’s a work area close by.
The house takes on a different grandeur by night. With all the garden lights turned on, it’s a truly magnificent sight.
