Kottayam house

When contemporary combines with the Chettinad style of architecture, the visual effect is stunning. Here is one such elevation in Ambadikavala near Kottayam, an imposing 2,450 sq ft on 28 cents of land.

The uniqueness of the house lies in the fact that it was designed and built by the owner himself.

House

The upper part of the elevation has been done with GI truss work with tiles paved on sloping roofs. This brings in a three-way benefit to the house. When viewed from outside the structure gives off a double-storied look. It keeps the temperature inside cool and the space up can be converted into a spacious hall. The gate is in the traditional padippura style and matches the style of the structure.

Verandah

The highlight of the house is its long verandah. Though the pillars lining the verandah give off the effect of wood, they are in reality made of concrete with simple carvings on them. The front door in two flaps looks elegant with the “manichitrathazu” lock on it.

Living room

The insides are spacious and colorful. The living-dining-staircase areas are all in the open style. All the rooms and their decor have been done up according to Vaastu. A wall paper in 3D finish adorns the wall of the living section.

Living room

The furniture is custom-made. Vitrified tiles in white finish give the floors elegance and complement the overall color theme of the rooms. The main hall sports a showcase where adornments can be displayed. The dining area has been set up beside the staircase with the wash area placed against the stairs. And behind this, lies the common bathroom.

Living room

The simple yet elegant staircase has GI pipe for handrail and storage units find room under the staircase. The windows on the double-height wall beside the staircase bring in sunlight and brighten up the insides.

Staircase

There are four minimally-styled bedrooms with attached bathrooms. The kitchen is simple and elegant with storage units built in teak wood finish.

Staircase

The water tank stands atop the house on GI frames. Not much money has been wasted on elaborate landscaping. The garden and the rest of the available space has been wisely used and managed well. The land in its original form has been kept intact
