Police file case against UDF for 'Janakeeya Metro Yatra' Congress activists accord a reception to former chief minister Oommen Chandy and other leaders who came to Kochi to take a ride on metro train.

Kochi: Aluva Police have filed a case against organizers of the United Democratic Front (UDF) 'Janakeeya Yatra' (people's journey), which was staged against Chandy's non-invitation to the recent inauguration of metro services here. The case is based on a complaint filed by Kochi Metro assistant line superintendent.

Former chief minister Oommen Chandy and leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala were among leaders who participated in the event, held to tacitly drive home the point about "what they perceive as the UDF's rightful role in building the Kochi metro". The crowd, which entered the Aluva Metro station, led by party leaders, violated all restrictions.

Two hundred tickets had been purchased for the journey, including those for the leaders. However, as the crowd started swelling, control gates were kept open. Chandy could not board the first train with Chennithala because of the heavy rush. He took a second train.

At Palarivattom, the escalator was damaged after crowds rushed in. Metal detectors installed for security check were shaken. People bulldozed their way in without security check. Automatic fare collection gates were kept open. The unruly mob even made platforms chaotic, and totally ignored instructions of security staff. The train was packed beyond its 1,000 maximum capacity, making it difficult even to close doors.

Chennithala had offered an apology for the hardship caused to public during the yatra led by Chandy. He explained that the yatra was staged to register protest as UDF leaders were ignored during the inauguration. No damage or hardship was expected. What was in play was the emotions of activists. He then expressed unconditional apology in response to complaints raised by KMRL and others.
