Kottayam: 'Be more inclusive' – is the message for the world from O Aishwarya, a young visually-challenged student who won the Blog It Onmanorama contest.
"The world around us does not accept people who are not normal. It needs to make an effort to include the specially-abled, not out of sympathy or charity, but that is the way society should be. This blog for me is the platform to be seen and heard – to highlight the issues faced by the differently-abled,” said Aishwarya after being presented with the best blogger award by Manoramaonline chief executive officer (CEO) Mariam Mammen Mathew at a function held in Kottayam on Wednesday.
The Kochi girl notched the top honour for her earnest, truthful and poignant portrayal of the world through her blog 'Sight Unseen'.
A PG student of Development Studies at Azim Premji University in Bengaluru, Aishwarya thanked her family, especially her brother, for being the wind beneath her wings. She also thanked Team Onmanorama for the honour, saying that the website provided a bigger platform for her to be heard.
Manoramaonline chief content coordinator Santhosh George Jacob presented the prize to first runner-up Hari Shree, a student of Sahrdaya College of Engineering and Technology, Kodakara. The award for the second runner-up went to Ashitha Meenu of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.
Hari Shree said the curbs put by society on girls in India is what awakened the feminist in her. Young doctor Ashitha Meenu said she would like to carry forward her writing along with her professional responsibilities.
The Blog It Onmanorama contest, held in December 2017, saw young minds, some from premier institutions, eagerly writing on a variety of topics ranging from trouble in Kashmir to Netherworld.
The contest for college students at once opened an avenue of expression for the bloggers and turned out to be a learning experience for Onmanorama. And the three brilliant girls emerged victorious from a group of 10 shortlisted bloggers.
All the three winners walked away with a Kindle, certificate and memento.
