The elephant was finally reined in after joint efforts by the police and the elephant squad.Palakkad: A mahout was gored to death by an elephant in the early hours of Tuesday at Melarkode in the district.
The incident happened during a religious function organised at the Masthan Auliya Mosque. The deceased mahout has been identified as Kannan, a native of Thrissur.
Kannan was gored when he was trying to deck up the elephant prior to the procession around 4 am.
The elephant called Kunchu, which was brought from Thrissur, then ran amok, creating panic in the area.
It was finally reined in after a few hours by the joint efforts of the police and the elephant squad.
