The strange incident happened with the members of the Madathikunnel family here.
Sai, the family head, said the rice also smelt bad after it changed colour.
The rice was bought from a Supplyco outlet at Kaduthuruthy. The family members claimed they had poured water in the remaining rice after they had finished supper on Friday night. By next morning, the rice acquired violet colour and it emanated intense odour.
Officials from the health department collected samples of the food. They suspect the presence of chemicals that got laced with the cereal for the strange occurrence.
