Mom who donated kidney to son celebrates 90th birthday

Kottayam: A rare motherhood has completed 90 years. Sarvamangala of Pakil Vadakkedathu Varyam, the mother who donated one of her kidneys to her son 30 years ago, is still in the pink of health and celebrated her 90th birthday on Friday.

Nearly a hundred relatives including her grandchildren and great grandchildren came together to celebrate the occasion.

Her son, Chandrashekaran Warrier, was found to have kidney disorder when he was 30. Organ transplant and operation were very rare then in Kerala. The transplant was held in Apollo hospital in Chennai on March 30 in 1988.

Both mother and son returned home after two weeks of treatment. After three months of bed rest, they both recovered completely.

Chandrashekharan was an employee in a private hotel in Kottayam at that time. After the transplant, he had traveled a lot, including foreign countries. He has never had any serious health issues since then.

To spread the awareness about organ transplant, Chandrashekhar and his wife Geeta have started an organization named Kidney Foundation in Guruvayoor.

Chandrashekaran has two sisters and three brothers as siblings.
