Kannur defence area issues to be taken up at Delhi meet

Kannur: People living under the jurisdiction of Kannur Cantonment Board hope that the problems faced by them will be resolved in the upcoming meeting called by defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on April 30 to discuss various issues falling under Cantonment Boards in the country.

MPs and Cantonment Board officials will participate in the meeting in Delhi where the issues pertaining to Kannur Cantonment Board will also be discussed.

Earlier, P K Sreemathy, MP, had submitted a memorandum to the Defence Minister asking the centre to address the issues in Kannur Cantonment Board. These include the eviction of shopkeepers in the region and iron wire fencing on the road.

The meeting will be attended by MPs from cantonment regions and officials from 62 Cantonment Boards.

Burning issues

Several shopkeepers who were doing business from a long time in the military enclave are on a warpath with Kannur Cantonment Board as the latter intends to evict shopkeepers from its jurisdiction. The Cantonment Board chose to evict even shopkeepers who were doing business for more than 30 years and had called for fresh tender to rent out their shops. The issue reached the High Court and it has stayed the eviction, but the tender process has not been stopped.

Another problem brewing in the region relates to iron wire fencing on the Kilashi road. The other day, the Board carried out the fencing with the help of a private contractor under police protection. Though people in the area reached the spot to protest, the fencing was completed under police vigil.

Earlier, local people had prevented a bid by the army personnel to raise the fencing. The CEO of the Board had assured to solve the issue, but the work was taken up again, ignoring the protest. People say that the path is used by hundreds of families and now the fencing has prevented them using the road. Though the Cantonment has spared a 3-feet path for people to commute, the local people say that it would not serve any purpose.
