Nedumkandam: A transformer on the Kumily-Munnar state highway is posing danger to pedestrians.

The transformer doesn't have security fencing and could pose a threat to the lives of several unsuspecting commuters, especially students, with a panchayat school and a BEd college situated nearby.

Panchayat member Shihabuddin has sought the setting up of a security fence or the removal of the transformer. He has threatened to launch a protest if either of these demands were not heeded to.

Many people pass by the transformer daily. Several government offices are also located near the transformer.

Thousands of vehicles pass through the stretch on the Kumily-Munnar state highway everyday. The transformer, which is close to the road, is a threat to the vehicles and those traveling in it.

Recently, a KSRTC bus hit a street light set up by the panchayat. Some speeding vehicles pass dangerously close to the transformer.

The situation has come to such a pass that locals stand guard near the transformer when school closes to prevent students from coming closer to it.

Since the Kumily-Munnar state highway road is being renovated, the transformer is now in the middle of the road, making it more dangerous.
