Robot built by Kerala boys wins laurels at US event

Kozhikode: A robot developed by school students from Kerala winning a prize at an international competition held in the USA defeating competitors from all over the world. The news may seem improbable, but that is exactly what a smart trio from Devagiri CMI public school achieved.

Gautham Praveen, Aditya Robin and S Rohan earned the honour at the International robotic championship organised by Lawrence Technological University in Michigan, the US.

Eight teams from India had participated in the international championship and the students from Devagiri were the only representation from Kerala. Over 300 students had competed in the national robotic championship held in Bengaluru to select the teams which were head to the global meet in America.

The hobby of all the three youngsters is building robots and other devices at home. From childhood, they had dreamed of learning robotics and when a weekly class was started at Devagiri school last year, they pounced on the opportunity. Now 25 students, including the prize-winning threesome, are undergoing robotics lessons at the school.

Gautham, Aditya and Rohan created a robot in the shape of a car using Lego tools for the international championship. It can move along a straight line and also take on enemy robots and counter them using strength. While light sensors are used to move along a straight path, the boys installed ultrasonic sensors to identify enemy robots.

The youngsters won the award in the smart robotics junior category at the event held in the USA.
