New Delhi: India on Tuesday expressed regret over the way Pakistan conducted meeting between Kulbhushan Jadhav, who is on death row in Pakistan for alleged spying, and his family. The Ministry of External Affairs said Pakistan violated the letter and spirit of the understanding between the two countries.
“Under the pretext of security precautions, the cultural and religious sensibilities of Jadhav's family were disregarded that included removal of 'mangal sutra',” PTI quoted the ministry as saying.
The family of Kulbhushan Jadhav met external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj here on Tuesday, a day after their controlled interaction with him in Islamabad.
Jadhav's mother and wife met Swaraj at her residence. Senior ministry officials were also present, according to sources.
The ministry said that from the feedback India has received of the meeting, it appeared that Jadhav was under "considerable stress" and speaking in an atmosphere of "coercion".
“Jadhav's appearance also raises questions about his health and well being. We also regret that contrary to assurances, the overall atmosphere of the meeting was intimidating as far as Jadhav's family members were concerned,” it said.
Jadhav's mother and wife met him at the heavily guarded building of the Pakistani foreign office.
The meeting, through a glass screen, came after The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) asked Pakistan in May to stay the 47-year-old Indian citizen's execution.
The external affairs ministry is yet to give any official reaction to the meeting between Jadhav and his family.
