Palakkad: With the steady rise in temperature in Kerala over the last few days, the ultraviolet (UV) radiation index in the state stands at alarmingly high levels, according to weather experts.
The high level of UV radiation is attributed to less cloud cover and dip in atmospheric moisture.
As per data, the radiation has touched 10 UV index in most parts of the state, with Thiruvananthapuram and Wayanad recording a maximum level of 12.
In 2014, the values of the UV index had hit 12 in Palakkad, the maximum recorded in the state during that period.
A UV index above 10 indicates hot weather conditions and high risk of sunstroke as well as severe heat wave, said Prof. M.K. Satheesh Kumar, head of the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics at Manipal University, which conducts advanced research in changing weather patterns.
How to protect yourself
The UV index levels reach its peak between 10 am and 3 pm. Continuous exposure to the sun for at least 15 minutes during the period may cause fatigue and degenerative changes in skin cells. Incidents of fire are also likely to rise as temperatures soar, the expert said.
People are advised to stay indoors during daytime to avoid unprotected exposure to sun. When out in the sun, always use sunscreens or wear dark sunglasses, which are UV protected and carry umbrella or wear caps while walking outdoors.
