Govindachamy Govindachamy, convict in the Soumya murder case. Onmanorama/File photo

Kannur: With the Supreme Court quashing Govindachamy's death penalty, he will be shifted from the high security wing to the common section of Kannur central jail. He is now admitted to the 10th block in which those convicted in serious crimes are being kept.

The inmates of the block include convicts who were sentenced to death, those who were charged with sedition and those charged with the Goonda Act.

Those who were convicted for death penalty are usually exempted from prison labor. As the lower courts' decision to grant death sentence has been scrapped, Govindachamy will also have to work in the jail from now on.

Jail authorities are yet to figure out what kind of work should be allotted to one-armed Govindachamy. Measures will be taken for the same after receiving the official order from the SC.

The jail authorities are yet to officially communicate the verdict to the accused.

However, Govindachamy came to know about the quashing of death penalty as he is allowed to watch TV in the prison.
