Kozhikode: The four actresses who resigned from Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) have received support from former chief minister and veteran CPM leader V S Achuthanandan as well as CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran. Meanwhile, Congress MLA V T Balram said that the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) should intervene politically in the issues raised by the actresses.
VS termed the decision of the actresses a brave act. “AMMA does not allow its members to express their individual opinion. The film industry will gain nothing from the organization,” he said.
Kanam said in Kozhikode that the democratic protest of the actresses was praiseworthy. “Ten years ago, I had opposed the stand taken by AMMA regarding the late actor Thilakan. I ensured that Thilakan received compensation, but nobody had supported me at that time,” said the CPI leader.
According to him, there was no need for the LDF actor-MLAs to quit over the development. “The MLAs have not violated any decision taken by the LDF. The present issue is only an internal matter of their association,” said Kanam.
Meanwhile, Balram, in his post on social media, pointed out that the front had ensured the victory of AMMA’s two new vice-presidents and the outgoing president in Assembly and Parliament elections. This makes it obligatory on the LDF to give a political explanation to the issues raised by the discerning women members of the film industry, he said. Balram also expressed his solidarity with the actresses and shared the Women in Cinema Collective’s post in this regard on his official social media account.
Actors Rima Kallingal, Geethu Mohandas, Remya Nambeeshan and the victim of the assault case quit AMMA on Wednesday to protest the soft stance taken by the association on popular actor Dileep who is accused of plotting the attack on the young actress. Dileep, who was expelled from AMMA last year following his arrest in the case, was reinstated to the association recently.
