Thiruvananthapuram: Noted travel writer, poet and teacher Prof B Sujatha Devi, the youngest sister of educationist Hridayakumari and poet Sugathakumari, died here on Saturday. She was 72. She had been ailing for quite some time, and was admitted to a private hospital here. She was declared dead at 3 a.m. on Saturday.
Her mortal remains were kept in her sister Sugathakumari's residence, Varada, at Nanthencode before being taken to Thycaud Santhi Kavadam for the final rites on Saturday.
Sujatha Devi, who began her career in Thiruvananthapuram Women's College, had later worked as English lecturer and professor in Pattambi Government College, Ernakulam Maharaja's College and Chalakkudy College. She retired from University College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Like her elder sister, Sujatha Devi had also written poems, all of which were published in her surname Devi. She is better known for her travel writing.
Her book 'Kaadukalude Thalam Thedi', which was both a travelogue and a treatise on environment, won the Sahithya Akademi award for travel writing in 1999. The book was born out of her travels to the Himalayas.
Sujatha Devi was born as the youngest daughter of poet and freedom fighter Bodheswaran and Karthiyani Amma. Her husband, P Gopalakrishnan Nair, had predeceased her. She had also lost her second son, Govindan, earlier. She is survived by her sons Parameshwaran and Padmanabhan. Her elder sister Hridayakumari had died in 2014.
