Palakkad and Idukki districts received maximum rainfall. Kalpetta: Traffic has been banned totally on the treacherous Wayanad pass on the Western Ghats as landslides continued in the nearby areas on Sunday morning. Considering the danger posed to motorists, authorities ordered the total ban on vehicular movement on Wayanad pass (churam) which is also known as the Thamarassery ghat pass.
The pass is on the national highway connecting Kozhikode with Wayanad in Kerala.
The pass, with 9 hairpin curves begins at Adivaram on the Kozhikode side and ends at Lakkidi, the gateway to Wayanad district. The entire ghat road stretches about 12 km.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department has said that Kerala received 40 per cent extra rain in a fortnight since the monsoon commenced.
Palakkad and Idukki districts received maximum rainfall. Palakkad obtained 114 per cent extra rain and Idukki got 111 per cent additional rain over the same period last year. Meanwhile, Wayanad district obtained 99 per cent extra monsoonal rain so far.
Kerala received 352 mm rain in two weeks, though it was expected to get about 252 mm.
Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram and Kasaragod districts, which had shortfall of rain last year, received copious rain this monsoon. However, Alappuzha and Thrissur have experienced lower rainfall than was expected.
Flood threat remains as floodgates of several dams have been opened amid intense rains.
The Met warned that intense rains will continue until June 20.
