Thiruvananthapuram: The incessant downpour has triggered landslides in various parts of Kerala, causing damage to life and property. Ten taluks in Kerala are highly susceptible to landslides, while 25 are on the list of areas with medium susceptibility to landslides.
Idukki and Palakkad are highly vulnerable to landslides. Several places that are on the vulnerable list have already witnessed landslides this year. In the landslide in eastern Kozhikode, two people lost their lives. Extensive loss to crops too have been reported. Wayanad too faces the threat of landslides.
According to the planning document of the state, 56.7 sq km of land are susceptible to landslides. This forms about 14.4 per cent of the state's area. Considering the landslide threat, the state disaster management authority has issued a high alert in hilly areas.
Kerala has witnessed 84 major landslides in the past 50 years, killing 295 people. In 2001, the landslide in Ambur in Thiruvananthapuram claimed the lives of 38 people.
